When choosing the right fencing for your project, it can be overwhelming with all the choices out there. What material do you use? What height do you need? We’ve put together the pros and cons of popular fencing materials.
Backyard Fencing
Your backyard should be an oasis, and privacy is vital in achieving that. But what type of fence is best for you?
Timber
Timber fencing is usually made from treated pine. Timber is popular because it is cost-effective; however, it tends to be higher maintenance than other fences. Wood can rot, especially where the posts sit underground, can sag over time and is at risk from termites so it often doesn’t last as long as other fencing materials.
Brick
Brick is an attractive fence material. It provides a warm, traditional look to your property. Brick needs a concrete footing underground to ensure the fence doesn’t crack or crumble. Unfortunately, with Perth’s sandy soil, this is a common problem. Another drawback of Brick fencing is that it’s more expensive than other fencing types and is more time-consuming to install.
Colorbond
Colorbond fencing provides a long-lasting fence that can be customised with a range of colours to match any style. Colorbond is sturdy and low maintenance. Metric Fencing stocks a wide range of Colorbond fencing panels in two distinct profiles and over 20 colours. It’s usually more expensive than timber, however Colorbond can last over 20 years if maintained.
Height
Another consideration for backyard fencing is the height. Height rules vary between councils; however, most require backyard fencing to be between 1,800mm and 2,400mm. We stock both 1,800mm and 2,400mm Colorbond heights but can supply other heights by request. Our installers can give you advice on what height you need.
Plinths
If your property is at a different height than your neighbour’s, you may need a plinth to hold in soil from the higher property. At Metric Fencing, we offer AliRetain plinths, which are made from non-combustible material, which adds some resistance to bushfires. AliRetain plinths are also a good way to keep snakes and other small animals away from your backyard.
Front yard fencing
Front yard fencing is usually shorter than backyard fencing and often requires less privacy. There are several options that provide security while also maintaining visibility and kerb appeal.
Aluminium slat fencing
Aluminium slat fencing is a popular choice for front yard fencing. It can be installed on its own or with brick posts. It is lightweight but sturdy. Our Metwood aluminium slat fencing comes in a variety of colours, including faux wood styles. It is rust-resistant and won’t wrap or rot like wood.
Tubular fencing
Tubular fencing is usually made from galvanised or powder-coated steel. It’s versatile as it’s available in several styles such as spears, loops, or straight, and can be finished in a number of colours. At Metric Fencing, we fabricate and powder coat all our tubular fencing right here in Perth so we are able to customise it to suit your specific needs.
In-fill panels
In-fill fence panels are a great way to finish brick fencing. They can be made of aluminium slats, Colorbond or tubular fencing.
